WHAT IS SOBOLO OR HIBISCUS TEA?

Hibiscus tea is a traditional herbal tea that is made by boiling flowers hibiscus plant. Hibiscus tea is commonly known as Sobolo or Zobo in Ghana and is a nutritious drink you can serve and enjoy.

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE A HEALTHY ZOBO OR HIBISCUS TEA

  • Grains of Selim
  • Cloves
  • Ginger
  • Dried pepper
  • Pineapple
  • A bowl full of crashed Hibiscus flowers 
  • Honey

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO MAKING SOBOLO OR HIBISCUS TEA.

  1. So what you are going to do is wash and slice your ginger in halves. Slicing single ginger into four pieces would be best.
  2. We will need the pineapple peels only so peel the pineapple and add the peels, your cloves, Grains of Selim, and dried pepper in a steel pot.
  3. Now put the cooking pot with the mixture on fire or flame and cover to boil for about 30 min.
  4. After boiling, the water around the mixture will change to a wine color or reddish color.
  5. Since it is hot, let it sit for about 2 hrs to cool down.
  6. Then use a strainer to strain the mixture to obtain the drink or filter the drink from the solid mixtures.
  7. Strain the liquid further again using a nut meal bag to remove little or fine particles at the bottom.
  8. Now add honey to taste good and stir. Honey is healthful, so keep on adding till you get the right taste you wish for. Remember plenty of it is bad, so a reasonable amount is alright.

Our drink is ready now, you can serve it chilled or with ice cubes.
